Cheap Mac Cleaner Apps Without a Subscription

Subscription fatigue is the number one reason people go looking for a different Mac cleaner. Paying every year for an app you open a handful of times feels wrong — because it usually is. Here are the good options you pay for once, or not at all.
Why cleaners went subscription
Recurring revenue is attractive to software companies, and cleaners lend themselves to it with “ongoing protection” features like malware databases. But the core job — show what is large, remove what you don’t need — doesn’t change from year to year. You shouldn’t have to rent it.
One-time purchase options
| App | One-time price | Macs | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| DiskMac Pro | $9 | 2 | Free scanning; Pro adds cleanup, uninstaller, developer cleanup |
| DaisyDisk | $9.99 | Per licence terms | Visual disk map |
| CleanMyMac (one-time) | $100+ | 1 | Subscription is the default; one-time costs much more |

Free with no strings
- GrandPerspective — treemap disk map.
- OmniDiskSweeper — folders sorted by size.
- AppCleaner — app uninstaller.
- OnyX — maintenance and cache tools.
DiskMac’s licence, plainly
- $9 once, plus local tax.
- Two Macs at a time; move it by deactivating the old one.
- No expiry, nothing renews.
- Works offline, with a two-week grace period if it can’t reach the licence server.
- 15-day no-questions refund.
- Scanning stays free even if you never buy.
How to cancel a cleaner subscription
If you bought through the Mac App Store: System Settings › [your name] › Media & Purchases › Subscriptions › Manage. If you bought from the vendor’s site, log in to their account page or check the receipt email for a link to the payment processor (often Paddle or FastSpring). Cancel before the renewal date — refunds after renewal are at the vendor’s discretion.
What you give up versus the expensive apps
- Malware scanning. macOS already has XProtect built in, and it updates silently. Most people don’t need a second scanner.
- “Speed-up” tools. Freeing RAM or running maintenance scripts has little effect on a modern Mac.
- Duplicate finders. Useful for big photo libraries; Photos itself now detects duplicates under Utilities › Duplicates.
Three-year cost
| Year 1 | 3 years | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical cleaner subscription (~$45/yr) | $45 | $135 |
| DaisyDisk | $9.99 | $9.99 |
| DiskMac Pro | $9 | $9 |
